Training programs / Bias and inclusion

Bias and inclusion: notice it, then say something

Feel exclusion from the inside, then practise the words that change the room.

The moment

A remark lands, and the room carries on

An idea is ignored, then praised when someone else repeats it. A customer is refused because of who they are. A colleague on a video call is talked over again. People notice. Knowing what to say in the next few seconds is harder.

Why it goes wrong

Training describes bias; the moment asks for a reply

A slide can define a microaggression. It cannot put someone in the seat of the person talked over, or give them a second try at stepping in.

Feel it, then choose

Perspective-taking puts the learner in the other person’s place first. Then the scene asks for a decision: call it out, call it in or let it pass, and the debrief talks through what each choice would have cost.

Every way to practise it

A library, a custom build, a browser and a facilitator

Most inclusion programs combine a ready-made title with a facilitated discussion.

Ready-made titles

Equal Reality VR, built by Equal Reality, a subsidiary of People Tech Revolution, holds Everyday Inclusion, Finding Common Ground and Speak to Me Normally. Mind Shift VR covers glass ceilings and inclusive hiring, and Lift VR was built with Kinspace.

Custom scenarios from your own incidents

Google’s scenarios were built with Equal Reality, a subsidiary of People Tech Revolution, from real incidents its employees shared. A custom build does the same with your organisation’s moments, written and reviewed with the people they happened to.

In the Etihad Airways and Metro Trains programs, Everyday Inclusion sat inside a longer facilitated program: at Etihad beside Mind Shift and a Yarning Circle, at Metro Trains in workshops split by audience.

Peer reviewed: Google, ACM CHI 2024

A peer-reviewed paper evaluated VR inclusion training built with Equal Reality. The 7 trainees who returned the optional survey gave 82% average agreement that it was better than Google’s standard DEI training, and 94% average satisfaction.

Peer reviewed: Mayo Clinic, a controlled trial

A DEI program People Tech Revolution built for Mayo Clinic nurse leaders was tested against a control group: those who trained gained in empathic feeling (p = .002). Read the Mayo Clinic papers.

At J.P. Morgan, local staff ran 7 events in 5 countries with over 200 participants, and 97% found VR more engaging than traditional training. At Domain, 89% said the VR made them more receptive to the workshop that followed.

Over the past six months, XRHealth Australia has worked closely with People Tech Revolution to co-design innovative immersive applications... supporting workplace mental health and recovery in the transport industry. Simon and his team have been exceptional collaborators: creative, responsive and genuinely committed to human-centred design. Their ability to understand clinical and operational needs and translate complex ideas into safe, realistic VR environments has made the partnership both productive and enjoyable. Together, we are developing practical, evidence-informed tools that build confidence, resilience and coping strategies through structured, real-world scenarios. I highly recommend People Tech Revolution as a trusted technology partner.

I don't think role plays will ever cut it again in this space. Participants are able to empathise and discuss the experiences... with detail that just wouldn't be possible without actually experiencing it themselves.

They jump back, step away, they gasp, they try to find their voice, they ask to be included and when dismissed, they physically shrink. And when they can't do any of those things, the learning sticks and the real conversations begin.
