Published research on this style of training consistently pairs the VR scenario with a live, human-led discussion afterwards, rather than a scripted response inside the headset. The CHI 2024 case study on Google's VR diversity and inclusion training describes a live, facilitated group debrief after each scenario as a deliberate design choice, run instead of an in-app discussion. Mayo Clinic's published nursing leadership research describes the same structure: VR immersion combined with small-group debriefing led by trained facilitators, across 28 two-hour sessions over 4 months.

PTR's own process strip on the XR page follows the same shape: a safe environment, real pressure, the learner's own choice, then reflect and repeat. Psychological safety is designed in, not bolted on.

Practice-based learning, backed by published research

The debrief is the mechanism, not just the headset

Published research on this method is explicit that the VR scenario alone is not what does the work. Fanning and Gaba's widely cited review of simulation-based learning describes debriefing, not the simulation itself, as one of the most important elements in turning a practice session into real learning, and it depends on a trained facilitator running a structured conversation afterward. Google's CHI 2024 authors add a further caution for VR role-play specifically: some of a session's positive response can reflect the novelty of the format rather than a lasting effect, headsets can be uncomfortable for people who wear glasses, and running facilitators and headsets at scale carries a real cost. None of this is a reason to skip VR: it is a reason to budget for the debrief and the facilitator alongside the headset, not instead of them.
