Our Work / Case Studies

Education case studies

PTR's education work spans a hands-on food education program built with FoodStream Network for New York City schools, and Everyday Inclusion, one of the earliest modules built for the PTR VR Library, originally co-designed with Cornell University. Both projects share the same underlying idea: put students and staff inside an experience rather than in front of a textbook or a slide deck, and let the discussion that follows do the rest of the teaching.

FoodStream Network: Cook It

Many students in the New York City schools PTR and FoodStream Network work with come from migrant backgrounds, for whom traditional food and health education can feel abstract or disconnected from daily life. Cook It replaces textbook lessons with cooking, teaching nutrition, maths, science and cultural appreciation through preparing real meals as a class. Teachers and program facilitators reported stronger student engagement, better understanding of nutritional concepts, and healthier eating habits carrying over at home.

Students (80%) actively chose to participate in the VR experience, as reported by FoodStream Network from one classroom sample.

Cornell University: Everyday Inclusion

Co-designed with Cornell University and diversity and inclusion expert Angela Winfield, Everyday Inclusion is a three-part VR experience exploring unconscious bias, microaggressions and intersectionality, giving students and staff a first-hand experience of bias rather than a lecture about it.
