# VR de-escalation training for the people who face it every shift

Nurses, carers, drivers and counter staff step into the moment, try a response, and try again.

What VR gives

## Step into the moment before it happens

A headset puts someone in front of a person who is escalating, with nowhere to look away. People describe that sense of being there as the difference from a classroom.

Your own hands, raised inside the scene.

A man faces you, replies ready to choose.

A tram driver, a reply panel beside her.

What practice gives

## What staff get from a headset

Presence, repetition and a debrief, each one hard to find on a normal shift.

A teacher crouches between two children.

### Presence

The scene looks like the ward, the bus or the playground where the conversation happens, so staff rehearse the response they will need there.

The same moment, ready for another try.

### Repetition without cost

Staff can run the same moment again straight away, and again after that, which a role-play day rarely allows. Nobody is embarrassed in front of colleagues, and nobody leaves the floor twice.

Stepping into the other person’s place.

### A debrief after every attempt

The learning happens in what is said afterwards: what the person tried, what shifted, and what they would do next time. A facilitator leads it, or staff replay their own response and go again.

What the research shows

## Controlled studies report real gains

Studies of VR rehearsal with a control group report measured change, and legislators have written the same method into law.

A clinician and patient, face to face.

### A controlled trial with nurse leaders

A [controlled trial in Social Science and Medicine](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.socscimed.2024.117648) studied a VR program built with Equal Reality, PTR’s DEI VR library, for Mayo Clinic nurse and social worker leaders. Leaders experienced bias as a nurse avatar, then rehearsed responding as themselves, with a facilitated debrief.

Empathy and upstander intentions rose against a control group and stayed above baseline months later. See the [Mayo Clinic research summary](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/research-evidence/vr-nursing-leaders-mayo-clinic).

A student speaks, a reply panel waits.

### Pooled across studies

A [systematic review and meta-analysis of VR in teacher education](https://doi.org/10.3389/frvir.2025.1620905) reports a positive moderate overall effect. [Does VR training work?](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/does-vr-training-work) sets out the evidence in full.

Colleagues rehearse together around a table.

### Written into law

[California’s health care standard](https://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/3342.html) requires an opportunity to practise the techniques, de-escalation among them, with co-workers, including a meeting to debrief the practice session. [Nevada](https://www.leg.state.nv.us/nrs/NRS-618.html) wrote the same into statute, and [Washington](https://app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=49.19.030) names hands-on practice or role play.

The [state-by-state guide](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/workplace-violence-training-united-states) sets out where each applies.

Proof

## Mater Education rehearses in its own rooms

Mater staff practise speaking up in recreations of their own hospital rooms. [Read the Mater case study](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/mater-speaking-with-good-judgement).

A trainee faces a colleague in a ward.

### Say it, hear it back, try again

After a scenario, staff record themselves responding, replay their delivery and rate their confidence before going again, in private.

Facilitators reported that staff felt safer and more confident, both in the sessions and afterwards at work. PTR’s [research and evidence](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/research-evidence) sets out every study behind the work.

How it runs

## Headset or browser, chosen by the work

Conversation rehearsal also runs with an [AI roleplay partner](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice) in a browser. Spatial and physical moments earn a [VR headset](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/virtual-reality).

Sizing the room before choosing a headset.

### Choose by the moment

A workforce spread across sites and shifts often suits the browser. A driver’s cab, a ward bay or a busy counter suits a headset. See [choosing the right technology](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/choosing-the-right-technology).

### Built for your people

Scenarios come from your own incident reports, and every attempt leaves a record your educators sign off.

Where it applies

## One skill, many workplaces

Questions

## What buyers ask about VR de-escalation training

Short answers, with the evidence behind them.

A field officer reaches into the scene.

### Does VR de-escalation training work?

Controlled studies of VR rehearsal report measured gains in empathy and in intentions to act, and a meta-analysis reports a positive moderate effect. A debrief and a record of each attempt show the result in your own setting.

A permits officer hears about a home renovation.

### How does it compare with classroom role play?

A skilled, facilitated role play is excellent training. VR adds frequency: staff practise on shift, in private, as often as they need.

A parks officer at the tailgate of a ute.

### What should we measure?

Attempts per person, what changed between them, and whether the behaviour shows up at work. The [workplace violence training records](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/workplace-violence-training-records) guide covers what to keep.
