# Occupational violence and aggression training that staff practise

Health, care and public-facing staff rehearse the moment a patient, client or visitor turns aggressive, before it happens on shift.

The moment

## Aggression arrives as a person, mid-shift

A man demands to be seen, now. A [resident living with dementia](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/aged-care-disability/dementia-changed-behaviours-training) pushes help away. A client in crisis raises his voice at the desk. Occupational violence and aggression (OVA) training, called [workplace violence prevention](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/workplace-violence-training-united-states) in the United States, prepares staff for these moments.

A carer approaches a resident in the hallway.

A client, head in hands, across the desk.

A community nurse waits at a client’s door.

What regulators ask

## The same skills, named in every market

Health regulators in Australia, the United States and Canada describe one core: read the warning signs, de-escalate, stay safe, and practise.

A team leader talks through an escalation.

### Australia

The NSW [Healthcare and social assistance industry Code of Practice](https://www.safework.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0014/1400027/Healthcare-and-social-assistance-industry-COP.pdf) asks for training in early warning signs of violent behaviour from patients and visitors, de-escalation techniques, personal safety, and specific care needs such as dementia and mental health conditions.

Victoria’s [OVA training guidance](https://www.health.vic.gov.au/worker-health-wellbeing/occupational-violence-and-aggression-training) adds roles in Code Grey and Code Black responses, and incident reporting. See [occupational violence rules across Australia](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/occupational-violence-australia).

Practice with a partner, face to face.

### United States

[California’s health care standard](https://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/3342.html) requires an opportunity to practise the techniques with co-workers, including a meeting to debrief the practice session. [Nevada](https://www.leg.state.nv.us/nrs/NRS-618.html) wrote the same practice and debrief into its statute, and [Washington](https://app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=49.19.030) names hands-on practice or role play.

Accredited hospitals also meet the [Joint Commission](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/joint-commission-workplace-violence)’s [workplace violence performance goal](https://www.jointcommission.org/en-us/standards/national-performance-goals/preventing-workplace-violence), which requires training at hire, annually and whenever the program changes.

### Canada

Federal [harassment and violence prevention regulations](https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2020-130/FullText.html) require training specific to the culture, conditions and activities of the work place.

Where training fits

## Redesign the work first, then train for what remains

[The NSW code](https://www.safework.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0014/1400027/Healthcare-and-social-assistance-industry-COP.pdf) ranks training among the least effective controls, because it relies on human behaviour, and pairs it with stronger ones. So the training has to change behaviour, and show that it did.

Reviewing an attempt against clear goals.

### Goals you can measure

Victoria’s [evaluation framework for OVA training](https://www.health.vic.gov.au/publications/evaluating-occupational-violence-and-aggression-training-framework-for-health-services) asks whether programs have clearly defined goals and measurable outcomes, and whether delivery is evidence based, cost effective and reflects local need.

Practice gives you something to measure: who rehearsed, which situations, and what changed between attempts.

How practice meets it

## Rehearse the conversation, then debrief it

Staff step into the situation in a [VR headset](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/virtual-reality) or with an [AI roleplay partner](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice) in a browser, respond in their own words, and go again.

A facilitator talks through what happened.

An intake conversation, rehearsed before the shift.

### Built from your incident reports

Scenarios come from the situations your staff name: the family at the desk after a fall, the patient in withdrawal, the visitor who will not leave.

Each attempt leaves a record of who practised what, and how often, for your educators to sign off.

### One method, every setting

It runs in [hospitals](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/healthcare-medical), [aged care](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/aged-care-disability), [disability support](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/disability) and [community services](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/justice-community-services).

Proof

## Mater Education rehearses hard conversations this way

Mater staff practise speaking up inside recreations of their own hospital rooms. [Read the Mater case study](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/mater-speaking-with-good-judgement).

A trainee and nurse, hands raised, mid-scene.

### Say it, hear it back, try again

After each scenario, staff record their response, replay it and rate their confidence before going again, in private.

Mater’s own facilitators now run the program. They reported that staff felt safer and more confident, in the sessions and afterwards at work.

Questions

## What buyers ask about OVA training

Short answers for health, care and frontline services.

A crisis conversation at an after-hours desk.

### Is OVA training the same as workplace violence prevention training?

They describe the same need. Australia says occupational violence and aggression; the United States says workplace violence prevention. Both cover de-escalation, personal safety and reporting.

A financial counsellor speaks with an older man.

### How does OVA training relate to de-escalation training?

[De-escalation training](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/de-escalation-training-healthcare) is one part of it. OVA training adds warning signs, personal safety, emergency response roles and reporting.

A man at the legal aid counter, seen through the headset.

### Does VR practice count?

Regulators name the topics and, in several US states, practice with a debrief. A VR or AI roleplay scenario delivers both, with a record of each attempt.

A facilitator faces two young men.

### Where does OVA sit among psychosocial hazards?

Aggression from patients, clients and the public is one of the [psychosocial hazards](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/psychosocial-hazards) employers must manage. [Victoria’s psychological health regulations](https://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/in-force/statutory-rules/occupational-health-and-safety-psychological-health-regulations-2025/001) name aggression or violence as an example.
