# iPhone, iPad and Android for augmented reality training

Augmented reality on the device already in the pocket: markers, surfaces and objects placed in the real room through the camera.

In a real room

## The widest reach of any device

Everyone on staff has one, nobody has to be fitted, and the layer opens where the person is standing.

A structure rises from a phone held over a marker.

A printed model gains an augmented reality layer.

Dotted planes found on a tablet.

Programs

## Which programs run on it

The programs that need no headset run here: practice with an AI roleplay partner, a knowledge twin, an augmented reality layer on the real room.

Practice on a laptop, monitor or phone.

### AI roleplay, knowledge twins and augmented reality layers

[AI roleplay practice](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice) runs in the browser on the phone or laptop staff already use; [knowledge twins](https://peopletechrevolution.com/training/knowledge-twins-and-expert-access) answer on the same device; an [induction](https://peopletechrevolution.com/training/induction-and-onboarding) can lay its route over the real site through the camera.

### What it does in a real room

Google describes ARCore as "cross-platform APIs to build new immersive experiences on Android, iOS, Unity, and Web", with motion tracking, surface detection and light estimation ([ARCore](https://developers.google.com/ar)); Apple’s [ARKit](https://developer.apple.com/augmented-reality/arkit/) does the same work on iPhone and iPad. The result is an object that sits on the real bench and stays there.

[Augmented reality at PTR](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/augmented-reality) covers what the layer does for practice.

The fleet

## What a fleet needs

The phones and tablets are already enrolled, so the questions are app distribution, camera permission and which devices are old enough to matter.

### The fleet you already manage

A web build opens with no install at all, which is why PTR’s practice, twin and augmented reality products run in a browser. [Headsets and equipment](https://peopletechrevolution.com/training/headsets-and-equipment) covers the no-headset route, and [governance](https://peopletechrevolution.com/about/governance) where the data lives.

### Who chooses it

Programs that need everyone, not a cohort: a whole workforce inducted, a member base reached, a community shown a place before it is built.

[Associations](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/associations-peak-bodies), [L&D leaders](https://peopletechrevolution.com/training/for-learning-and-development-leaders) and [mobile experiences](https://peopletechrevolution.com/fast-builds/mobile-experiences) describe the fit from their side.

What PTR ships

## What PTR ships on it

The AR Business Card is PTR’s live augmented reality build: point a phone at the card and it opens up.

A figure appears above a card.

### The AR Business Card, browser practice and mobile builds

Try it on [PTR Labs](https://labs.peopletechrevolution.com/play), beside a hand-tracked game, a full-body gesture wall and a 360 environment viewer. [AI roleplay practice](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice) runs in the browser, and [mobile experiences](https://peopletechrevolution.com/fast-builds/mobile-experiences) covers a native build for iOS and Android.

Questions

## What do buyers ask about Phones and tablets?

Short answers, each with a link to the page that answers in full.

A learner holds a phone above pipework.

### Does augmented reality on a phone need an app?

A web build opens in the browser with no install; a native build through ARKit or ARCore is installed like any other app. [Web experiences](https://peopletechrevolution.com/fast-builds/web-experiences) and [mobile experiences](https://peopletechrevolution.com/fast-builds/mobile-experiences) compare the routes.

### Can staff practise a conversation on a phone?

With an [AI roleplay partner](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice) in the browser, they can: a counterpart who answers back, then a record of the attempt. The headset is the deeper version of the same practice.

Viewing an overlay through a tablet.

### When does a phone stop being enough?

When the scenario needs the room replaced, or a counterpart standing in it. [Meta Quest 3](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/devices/meta-quest-3) covers the headset most Library titles ship on, and [choosing the right technology](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/choosing-the-right-technology) matches each option to the outcome.
