# Government and public sector case studies

A council that wanted its whole community, not only its staff, to understand what a [disability](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/aged-care-disability) changes about an ordinary day.

A participant on the beachside terrace, facilitator alongside.

## The public counter is the hardest room

A resident who has waited an hour, a colleague who has had enough, a ramp that is not where the map says: local government meets these moments at the counter and on the footpath.

Central Coast Council brought PTR one of them, and the program it built has been running across the Central Coast ever since.

## Raising awareness of disability

A VR experience co-designed with the Council's Access and Inclusion Reference Group, whose members appear in the build.

Guide markers rise from the sand.

### The beach and the shopping centre, from a wheelchair

The Council wanted local business, sport and recreation to understand access from the inside, so the experience gives a first-person view of a beach and a shopping centre with a disability.

It has been delivered more than 200 times across the community and is now part of teacher training, council staff training and CSIRO-facilitated sessions.

### What council staff and residents rehearse

A concern raised at the counter, a footpath walked with a cane, a scenario from a wheelchair.

A resident raises a concern at the counter.

A therapist walks behind a white cane user.

A facilitator crouches beside a participant mid-scenario.

> "Our ethos from the beginning has been about co-designing solutions alongside people with lived experiences."

## The rooms public servants practise in

Counters, doorsteps, depots and hearing rooms: the conversations the public sector gets one attempt at, each one rehearsable.

A home visit, and a door opening.

The public counter, seen from inside the simulation.

Giving evidence, practised before the day it counts.

### And the field and depot side

A toolbox talk before the shift, and a response that starts outdoors, unplanned.

A crew leader runs a depot toolbox talk.

A field officer responds outdoors.
