# Bias and inclusion: notice it, then say something

Feel exclusion from the inside, then practise the words that change the room.

The moment

## A remark lands, and the room carries on

An idea is ignored, then praised when someone else repeats it. A customer is refused because of who they are. A colleague on a video call is talked over again. People notice. Knowing what to say in the next few seconds is harder.

Speaking up at the meeting table.

A video call scenario from the Google training.

A retail customer waits for a reply.

Why it goes wrong

## Training describes bias; the moment asks for a reply

A slide can define a microaggression. It cannot put someone in the seat of the person talked over, or give them a second try at stepping in.

A man in a corridor as colleagues pass.

### Feel it, then choose

Perspective-taking puts the learner in the other person’s place first. Then the scene asks for a decision: call it out, call it in or let it pass, and the debrief talks through what each choice would have cost.

Every way to practise it

## A library, a custom build, a browser and a facilitator

Most inclusion programs combine a ready-made title with a facilitated discussion.

A colleague across the table, replies in view.

### Ready-made titles

[Equal Reality VR](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/ptr-vr-library/equal-reality-vr), built by Equal Reality, a subsidiary of People Tech Revolution, holds [Everyday Inclusion](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/ptr-vr-library/everyday-inclusion), [Finding Common Ground](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/ptr-vr-library/finding-common-ground) and [Speak to Me Normally](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/ptr-vr-library/speak-to-me-normally). [Mind Shift VR](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/ptr-vr-library/mind-shift) covers glass ceilings and inclusive hiring, and [Lift VR](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/ptr-vr-library/lift-vr) was built with Kinspace.

### Custom scenarios from your own incidents

Google’s scenarios were built with Equal Reality, a subsidiary of People Tech Revolution, from real incidents its employees shared. A [custom build](https://peopletechrevolution.com/training/vr-training-and-roleplay) does the same with your organisation’s moments, written and reviewed with the people they happened to.

Colleagues in an open team area.

### AI roleplay in a browser

An [AI roleplay partner](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice) lets someone rehearse stepping in, or answering a colleague who pushes back, on a laptop or phone, as often as it takes.

People gather in a VR workshop.

### A facilitated workshop

In the [Etihad Airways](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/etihad-cabin-crew-inclusion) and [Metro Trains](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/metro-trains-gender-equity) programs, Everyday Inclusion sat inside a longer facilitated program: at Etihad beside Mind Shift and a Yarning Circle, at Metro Trains in workshops split by audience.

The evidence

## Peer-reviewed research, and results Equal Reality published

Evidence to take into a sign-off meeting, with who produced each result.

### Peer reviewed: Google, ACM CHI 2024

A [peer-reviewed paper](https://peopletechrevolution.com/uploads/docs/people-tech-revolution-google-vr-inclusion-training-chi-2024.pdf) evaluated VR inclusion training built with Equal Reality. The 7 trainees who returned the optional survey gave 82% average agreement that it was better than Google’s standard DEI training, and 94% average satisfaction.

### Peer reviewed: Mayo Clinic, a controlled trial

A DEI program People Tech Revolution built for Mayo Clinic nurse leaders was tested against a control group: those who trained gained in empathic feeling ([p = .002](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.socscimed.2024.117648)). ### Published by Equal Reality

At [J.P. Morgan](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/jp-morgan-inclusion-pilot), local staff ran 7 events in 5 countries with over 200 participants, and 97% found VR more engaging than traditional training. At [Domain](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/domain-group-inclusion-rollout), 89% said the VR made them more receptive to the workshop that followed.

How it runs

## Run it the way your team already learns.
