# Collaborate remotely with VR

[Extended reality](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/xr/what-is-xr), which covers virtual and [augmented reality](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/xr/what-is-augmented-reality), is changing how people collaborate remotely and making workplaces more inclusive. A headset puts people in the same space from anywhere.

## Enhanced presence and immersion

Remote colleagues can speak and move within the same virtual setting, rather than watching each other through a row of video tiles.

VR games and simulations use the same medium to make learning and training far more interactive, and at events and conferences remote attendance widens who can take part and cuts the cost of travel.

### Where the medium already helps

How VR changes who can take part, and how it feels once they are there.

Geographical accessibility. Team members enter the same virtual environment and speak in real time, wherever they are based.

Inclusive work environments. A virtual meeting can give someone who cannot easily reach a meeting room another way to attend.

Virtual events and conferences. Participants move between talks, meet each other and join workshops remotely, in a shared virtual venue.

Accessibility features. Real-time captions and transcription can make an event more accessible to someone who needs them.

Reduced costs and impact. Replacing a physical venue and the travel to it can reduce travel costs, venue costs and associated emissions.

Diverse audience engagement. Participants from different countries and industries can meet through the same VR event.

## Update, August 2026

This article was first published in March 2024. Since then, PTR has built on these remote-collaboration ideas with live digital twins and AI roleplay practice for remote conversation practice, alongside the PTR VR Library for facilitated remote sessions.
