# Nevada workplace violence training: practise it with colleagues

Nevada medical facilities train patient-facing staff in de-escalation, practised with colleagues, debriefed, and recorded session by session.

The moment

## The ward where the plan has to hold

A [patient who will not settle](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/de-escalation-training-healthcare) on a night shift. A family member at the station. A colleague who needs backup down the corridor. Nevada writes training for these moments into law.

A colleague waits, arms folded, at the station.

A family member in the hospital corridor.

A family meeting in a consulting room.

What it asks

## One training duty, across the statute

[Nevada Revised Statutes chapter 618](https://www.leg.state.nv.us/nrs/NRS-618.html) asks each medical facility for a safety committee, a written plan, training, response procedures and records.

A review in the ward office.

### A committee and a written plan

Each facility sets up a committee on workplace safety and writes a plan that is in effect at all times, available to every employee, and specific to each unit, area and location.

Two nurses practise side by side.

### Training at four moments

On a new plan. On starting work, then annually. On new duties in a new location. And when a previously unrecognised hazard appears or the facility changes materially.

A teacher faces her own reflection between classroom desks.

### Practice, then a debrief

Everyone with patient contact trains in verbal intervention and de-escalation in a way that lets them practise with the colleagues they work with, and each practice session ends in a meeting to debrief it.

A colleague, arms folded, hears him out.

### A record of each session

The facility keeps a record of each training session, available to the Division on request. Records carry no personally identifiable information about any patient, employee or other provider of care.

### After an incident

Response procedures include first aid, counselling for everyone affected, and the offer of a debrief as soon as possible. Staff are asked what led to the incident and what might have prevented it.

Where practice fits

## A statute that reads like a training specification

Practice with colleagues, a debrief and a record of each session. Nevada names the method as well as the topics.

A practice run, talked through afterwards.

### Built to be evidenced

Staff rehearse in a [VR de-escalation scenario](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/vr-de-escalation-training) or with an [AI roleplay partner](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice). Each run is recorded against the person who did it, so the [training register](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/workplace-violence-training-records) holds the practice and the debrief together.

A librarian and a student talk across the counter.

### Where the other rules sit

[California’s health care rule](https://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/3342.html) holds the same practice and debrief clause, and [the Joint Commission](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/joint-commission-workplace-violence) asks accredited hospitals for [training in de-escalation](https://digitalassets.jointcommission.org/api/public/content/0c8d9cd5ed3145b6bc9369920b69ca21?v=9dec6a64) as well.

Beyond Nevada

## The same moments, in other places

Nevada is one of several [US workplace violence training rules](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/workplace-violence-training-united-states). Hospitals in Australia and the UK prepare staff for the same shifts.

### Australia

Australian hospitals are assessed on [the NSQHS action on aggression and de-escalation](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/nsqhs-action-5-34) and on [the action on mandatory training](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/nsqhs-action-1-20). See [occupational violence rules in Australia](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/occupational-violence-australia).

### United Kingdom

NHS England’s [violence prevention and reduction standard](https://www.england.nhs.uk/publication/violence-prevention-and-reduction-standard/) asks for suitable and sufficient training for all staff.

How it runs

## Practice that feels like the shift

Scenarios run in a [VR headset](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/virtual-reality) or a browser, as part of [hospital de-escalation training](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/healthcare-medical). See one in the [Mater Education case study](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/mater-speaking-with-good-judgement).

A practice partner, face to face.

A facilitator beside the first attempt.

Questions

## What medical facilities ask first

Short answers to the questions that follow a first reading of the statute.

A hard conversation, rehearsed face to face.

### Who does the Nevada law apply to?

Medical facilities, their employees and other providers of care there. The de-escalation practice clause covers everyone with patient contact.

A community nurse greets an older woman at her door.

### How often is the training repeated?

On starting work and annually, and again on a new plan, new duties in a new location, or a new hazard.

A parent and clinician, in a recreated Mater setting.

### Can the training be delivered online?

The de-escalation part needs practice with colleagues and a debrief of each session. A format without both misses that clause.
