# NDIS worker training: from orientation to the participant in front of you

Orientation covers the core obligations. The support a worker gives on Tuesday depends on the person, their plan and the worker’s role.

The moment

## Training that matches the support being delivered

A support worker starts with a new participant. They have finished orientation. Do they know this person’s preferences, what to do when things change, and when to call for help? The [NDIS Commission’s training guidance](https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/workforce/training-workers/guide-for-ndis-providers/training-your-workers) connects capability with the support provided.

The rules

## What the NDIS Practice Standards require

Registered providers keep evidence of induction, of ongoing training, and of the skills a participant’s plan needs.

### Orientation is part of induction

The [core governance module](https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/rules-and-standards/ndis-practice-standards/core-module-provider-governance-and-operational) requires an orientation and induction process that workers complete, including the mandatory NDIS worker orientation program. Keep that evidence separate from evidence a worker can deliver a particular support safely.

A wheelchair user chairs a three-person meeting.

### Training continues after orientation

The [same module](https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/rules-and-standards/ndis-practice-standards/core-module-provider-governance-and-operational) requires a system for identifying, planning, recording and evaluating worker training, with role boundaries and supervision. Map it to the supports your registration and workforce cover.

### Behaviour support needs the person’s plan

The [implementing behaviour support module](https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/rules-and-standards/ndis-practice-standards/supplementary-module-implementing-behaviour-support) requires training in the safe use of restrictive practices and skills to implement each participant’s plan. See [restrictive practices training requirements](https://peopletechrevolution.com/insights/restrictive-practices-training-requirements).

Beyond Australia

## England and New York name their own requirements

Neither is an NDIS requirement. Each shows how another system ties training to the role.

A care worker walks beside an older man in a corridor.

### England: induction that prepares staff for the role

For CQC-regulated activities, the [staffing regulation](https://www.cqc.org.uk/guidance-regulation/providers/regulations-service-providers-and-managers/health-social-care-act/regulation-18) covers appropriate training, support, supervision and appraisal, and its guidance asks for an induction that prepares staff for their role.

### United States: find the actual program first

[New York’s person-centred planning guidance](https://www.health.ny.gov/health_care/managed_care/plans/pcsp_guidelines.htm) addresses managed care organisations, local social services departments and Health Homes. A US buyer starts from the program and its workforce rules.

The rehearsals

## Three planning prompts a provider can use

Each one is built with the participant, or an appropriate representative, reviewing the scenario.

A case manager leans toward an older man.

### Map the worker’s role

Record the support, the participant’s preferences, the knowledge needed, and which tasks sit inside and outside the role. Link each to the standard, plan or procedure, and name who assesses it.

### Test a realistic handover

From approved, de-identified material, the worker explains the participant’s preferences, responds to a change and says when they would seek help. Keep confidential participant records out of the scenario.

A wheelchair volunteer talks with a coordinator.

### Review learning in practice

Compare what the worker did with the plan and the role. Record feedback and further support, arrange supervision, and review again when the participant’s needs or the worker’s duties change.

How it runs

## Rehearse the support before the shift

Workers practise in a [VR headset](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/virtual-reality) or with an [AI roleplay partner](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice) in a browser, then debrief with a supervisor.

Questions

## What NDIS providers ask first

Short answers.

A receptionist leans over the desk to an older man.

### Does orientation qualify someone for every support?

No. Orientation covers core obligations. Role-specific skills, participant plans and supervision are considered separately.

### Is this an accredited NDIS course?

This guide is not a course. Ask any supplier what recognition it claims, who grants it and what it covers.

An instructor watches an older man working.

### Can communication practice replace behaviour support training?

No. It covers a defined part of the work. Plan implementation, restrictive-practice safeguards and specialist roles are covered through the plan and provider arrangements.

### What records should we ask a supplier for?

Learning objectives, source mapping, attendance, the assessment method, feedback and follow-up. Agree which show participation and which show capability.
