# What the Joint Commission asks of workplace violence training

Every accredited hospital trains its people to prevent, recognise and respond to violence. The requirement names what that training covers.

The moment

## A hospital meets it one conversation at a time

The relative at [the triage desk](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/de-escalation-training-healthcare). The patient who pulls away at the bedside. The family who hear hard news in a quiet room. The Joint Commission asks accredited hospitals to prepare staff for each of them.

A man waits at the triage counter.

At the bedside, through the clinician’s eyes.

A family room before a hard conversation.

What it asks

## One program, three elements of performance

The [national performance goal on workplace violence](https://www.jointcommission.org/en-us/standards/national-performance-goals/preventing-workplace-violence) asks each accredited hospital for a program, for training, and for an annual worksite analysis.

A facilitator cheers on a clinician mid-practice.

### A program with a named lead

The program is [led by a designated individual and developed by a multidisciplinary team](https://digitalassets.jointcommission.org/api/public/content/0c8d9cd5ed3145b6bc9369920b69ca21?v=9dec6a64). It covers policies to prevent and respond, incident reporting and trend analysis, support for victims and witnesses, and reporting to the governing body.

### Training at hire, annually and on change

Leaders, staff and licensed practitioners are trained at hire, annually, and whenever the program changes. The hospital decides which parts suit each role.

An enrolment officer talks with a visitor.

### What the training covers

What counts as workplace violence. The roles of leaders, clinical staff, security and law enforcement. De-escalation, nonphysical intervention, physical intervention and emergency response. And the reporting process.

A review in the ward office.

### An annual worksite analysis

Each year the hospital analyses its risks and acts on what it finds. The analysis asks how its [policies and procedures, training, education and environmental design](https://digitalassets.jointcommission.org/api/public/content/0c8d9cd5ed3145b6bc9369920b69ca21?v=9dec6a64) reflect best practice and conform to the law.

Where practice fits

## De-escalation is a skill, so staff rehearse it

The Commission names de-escalation and nonphysical intervention. Both are done with a voice, a stance and a distance, in a room.

An agitated man at the triage desk.

### Practice that leaves a record

Staff rehearse the conversation in a [VR de-escalation scenario](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/vr-de-escalation-training) or with an [AI roleplay partner](https://peopletechrevolution.com/ai/ai-roleplay-practice), and each run is recorded against the person who did it. That record belongs in the [training register](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/workplace-violence-training-records).

A community nurse greets an older woman at her door.

### Where state law goes further

[California](https://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/3342.html) requires practice with colleagues and a debrief for health care staff, and [Nevada](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/nevada-workplace-violence-training) adds a record of each session. An accredited hospital in either state works to both.

Beyond the United States

## The same expectation in Australia and the UK

The Commission is one of several bodies asking hospitals for this. [The US rules, state by state](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/workplace-violence-training-united-states) sit alongside it.

### Australia

Australian hospitals are assessed on [the NSQHS action on aggression and de-escalation](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/nsqhs-action-5-34) and on [the action on mandatory training](https://peopletechrevolution.com/learn/standards/nsqhs-action-1-20). See [NSQHS training for Directors of Clinical Services](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/healthcare-medical/directors-of-clinical-services).

### United Kingdom

NHS England’s [violence prevention and reduction standard](https://www.england.nhs.uk/publication/violence-prevention-and-reduction-standard/) asks for suitable and sufficient training for all staff.

How it runs

## Scenarios built on the hospital’s own wards

Staff practise in a [VR headset](https://peopletechrevolution.com/xr/virtual-reality) or a browser, as part of [hospital de-escalation training](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/industries/healthcare-medical). See one in the [Mater Education case study](https://peopletechrevolution.com/work/case-studies/mater-speaking-with-good-judgement).

Questions

## What hospitals ask first

Short answers to the questions that follow a first reading of the requirement.

A nurse beside a patient in a recliner.

### How often is the training required?

At time of hire, annually, and whenever the workplace violence prevention program changes.

A return-to-work moment in an open-plan office.

### Is the goal a new requirement for 2026?

It carries forward the requirement in force since January 2022, now organised as a [national performance goal](https://www.jointcommission.org/en-us/standards/national-performance-goals/preventing-workplace-violence).

A maternity checkup, seen through the headset.

### What must be documented?

Documentation is required for the training and for the annual worksite analysis. A training record shows who was trained, when, and in what.
